There is an error - I mention that swords were made using a Damascus technique, when I really ment pattern-weld.

Damascus is a process developed in India, and we should really call it "wootz" steel, 'cause that is what it is. Wootz gives you that nice swirly pattern which is soooo expensive. This happens when different grades of steel (carbon ratios) are tossed in the melting pot together. They've been doing that in India since Roman times!
Now Pattern-welding is a very different thing: The process of heat welding is very tricky - you have to hit it while it's at the semi-liqued stage, which for 100 pt. steel is between about 2,200 and 2,600 degrees. Narrow time slot, you have to be able to gage your steel just right. Now you start with two bars, one of 40 pt and one of 60 pt, hammer them together, draw them out and twist them in what's called an S twist (//////). Then you make a similar bar in the same manner, but give it a Z twist (\\\\\\\). Then three bars of 80 pt steel are placed in between the two 40/60 bars (to strengthen the edges and the center), and these are heat welded together. There ya go!
